NEW DELHI: Young Indian shooters Varun Tomar and Esha Singh secured two Olympic quota places for India with gold medals in the men's and women's 10m Air Pistol events at the Asian Qualifiers.
The dynamic duo's stellar performance took India's total count of Olympic-bound shooters to 15, equaling the highest-ever tally achieved in the Tokyo Games.
In the men's event, 20-year-old Varun Tomar clinched the gold medal with a score of 239.6 in the final, while Arjun Cheema secured the silver with a score of 237.3. The bronze medal was claimed by Mongolia's Davaakhuu Enkhtaivan with a score of 217.2. Additionally, Tomar, along with Cheema and Ujjawal Malik, secured the team gold with a total score of 1740.
In the women's event, 18-year-old Esha Singh displayed exceptional skill, winning the gold medal with a score of 243.1. Pakistan's Kishmala Talat secured the silver with a score of 236.3, while Esha's compatriot Rhythm Sangwan clinched the bronze with a score of 214.5. Esha, Rhythm, and Surbhi Rao also contributed to India's success by securing the team gold with a combined score of 1736.
The total number of Indian shooters heading to the Paris Olympics now stands at 15, and there is potential to increase this count in the upcoming qualifiers. The Asian Qualifiers are a crucial platform for securing Olympic quota places, and India's shooters continue to shine, reinforcing the country's strong presence in the international shooting arena.
The 10m air pistol events for men and women at the Asian Qualifiers offer a total of four Olympic quota places, with a maximum of three for Indian shooters. The achievement adds to India's successful run in shooting, where the team had already secured 13 Olympic quota places across rifle, pistol, and shotgun disciplines before the start of the tournament.
