NEW DELHI:
Sanjeev Rajput stole the show from Gagan Narang in the 50m Rifle 3 Position by shattering the meet record as India's medal tally swelled to 30, including 14 gold, on the sixth day of the Commonwealth Shooting Championships on Tuesday.
Rajput, who had teamed up with Gagan on Monday to clinch the team gold, outshone his more accomplished compatriot by shooting a score of 1272.9 (1172+100.9), a major improvement on the previous meet record of 1260.2 set by Pemmiaha Subbiah in the 1999 edition in New Zealand.
Gagan settled for silver with a score of 1269 (1168+101.1), while another Indian Hasan Imran Khan took home the bronze medal after shooting 1259.6 (1161+98.6).
India fetched the second gold in the 25m center fire pistol team event. Vijay Kumar teamed up with Mahender Singh to claim the top honours notch as the duo shot a combined score of 1159.
The silver in the event went to Welshmen Alan Green and Steve Pengelly (1131), while England's Michael Gault and Iqbal Ubhi, who shot a score of 1103, bagged the bronze.
Indian women shooters, however, failed to pocket a gold on Tuesday. In the 10m Air Rifle team competition, Priya Aggarwal and Neha Sapte had to be content with a silver medal after shooting a total of 782, way behind gold medal winners Akhter Sharmm Ratna and Sadiya Sultana of Bangladesh, who scored 790.
Besides clinching the gold, Ratna and Sultana also broke the meet record of 789 set by India's Suma Dixit and Anjali Bhagwat in 1999.
The bronze in this event went to England's Sheree Cox and Sharon Lee, who combined for a score of 780.
In the individual competition too, Bangladesh dominated with Akhter (396) notching up the gold and Sultana (394) picking up the silver. Priya took home the bronze with a score of 393.
In the individual trap competition for women, Shreyasi Singh managed a silver with a score of 89, three points behind gold winner Kirsty Barr of Northern Ireland.
The bronze medal went to Scotland's Shona Marshall who scored 86.
By adding the consolation badges that are given to the third shooter in a team event, India's tally comes to 23 gold, 16 silver and nine bronze medals.
