'Wide draw thwarted Derby favourites'

MUMBAI: Racing enthusiasts are still trying to figure out the reasons behind the result of last Sunday's Indian Derby. While few dispute that Ranquelino was a deserving winner, the underwhelming performances of several leading contenders continue to baffle many.

TOI spoke to former top jockey-turned-trainer PS Chauhan and trainer Adhirajsingh Jodha to dissect why the race unfolded the way it did. "I believe most of the fancied runners were compromised by their wide draws, which significantly impacted their chances," observed Chauhan. "At Mahalaxmi, the first turn comes up quickly, and those drawn wide had to cover at least an extra 100 meters to get in position."

Chauhan also pointed to the blistering early pace set by African Gold as a key disruptor. "Billy Lee (the jockey) burned up his mount's chances by going to the front too aggressively," he noted. "If an Indian rider had done that, he'd probably be looking at a lengthy suspension," he added with a chuckle.

Jodha, meanwhile, credited the trio of runners who exceeded expectations. "Santissimo simply couldn't find more, despite Oisin Murphy's best efforts, while Psychic Star may have felt the toll of contesting three Indian Classics earlier in the season," he opined.

While post-mortems of the Indian Derby will continue, the simple truth remains-big races don't come with guarantees. Wide draws and race-day dynamics will always play their part, but champions are forged in adversity. Ranquelino seized his moment, while others faltered, leaving punters and pundits alike to ponder the eternal question: was it misfortune or just another day at the races?
