TOISA 2025: Devendra Jhajharia backs India for 50 medals at LA 2028 Paralympics

Devendra Jhajharia, a member of the jury at the Times of India Sports Awards (TOISA) 2025, said India is on track "to win close to 50 medals" at the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympics."We won 29 medals at the Paris Paralympics, and I believe we can reach close to 50 medals at the LA 2028 Paralympics," Jhajharia said.The award ceremony in Lucknow recognised athletes across more than 45 sporting categories, honouring performances delivered during the evaluation period from January 1 to December 31, 2025. Jhajharia, the three-time Paralympic medalist, pointed to the growth in infrastructure, athlete development and exposure at the international level as key factors behind the projection.The president of the Paralympic Committee of India said India’s recent performances across disciplines indicate a steady rise, with athletes delivering results at global competitions and building consistency over multiple cycles.The former Paralympic champion also referred to the expanding pool of athletes across sports, including athletics, shooting, wrestling, badminton and hockey, as a sign of depth in the system.Jhajharia added that continued focus on grassroots programmes, coaching and support systems would be important in maintaining the trajectory leading up to the 2028 Paralympic Games.The winners were selected by an illustrious jury comprising legendary athletes whose achievements have shaped Indian sport.Abhinav Bindra, PR Sreejesh, Mithali Raj, Achanta Sharath Kamal, Leander Paes, and Devendra Jhajharia formed the panel for this edition.Their collective experience ensured that the honours reflected performances across levels, recognising contributions that shaped India’s sporting ecosystem.
