NEW DELHI:
Sreeja Akula, India's premier table tennis player, has suffered a stress fracture that will keep her out of action for six weeks. As a result, she will be unable to participate in the upcoming Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) tournament, which is scheduled to commence on August 22.
"I'm sorry to share that I have been diagnosed with a stress fracture and on my doctor's advice, I'll need to rest for six weeks, which unfortunately means I won't be able to participate in UTT 2024," Akula, currently ranked world No.
21, said in a statement as quoted by Olympics.com.
Akula was originally selected to represent the Jaipur Patriots in UTT 2024. However, due to her injury, she will be replaced by Nithyashree Mani, the U19 Youth National Champion and a newcomer to the UTT.
Just last week, Sreeja Akula achieved a significant milestone by becoming the highest-ranked Indian table tennis player in women's singles, reaching world No. 22.
This accomplishment followed her impressive performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Akula and
Manika Batra made history by becoming the first Indian table tennis players to advance to the round of 16 in individual events at the Olympics.
Unfortunately, Akula's journey came to an end when she was defeated by the world No. 1, Yingsha Sun of the People's Republic of China, in the round of 16.
According to Olympics.com, Sreeja and Manika are the only Indian table tennis players to have reached the top 25 in the women's singles rankings.
