National Sports Day celebrations flagged-off at

Anantapur Sports Academy

(ASA) with a session of morning yoga by around 175 kids on August 27, two days prior to legendary

Major Dhyan Chand

's 112th birth anniversary. The Indian 'Hockey Wizard' who brought laurels to the country by winning three Olympic golds.

The kids were grouped into 17 teams having players from different sports including girls and boys from hockey, cricket, football, tennis and judo. The games were planned to maximize the fun quotient on each day.

On the second day, a relay-run was organized and each team had to go through sack run, three-legged run, and blind-fold run to win. The afternoon involved football matches which witnessed boys taking training sessions before the matches for players from others sports. An art competition was also organized for the kids to showcase their artistic skills.

The third day witnessed chief guest

Dasarath

, Director, Community Based Rehabilitation at Rural Development Trust sharing interesting facts about Dhyan Chand and how he got his surname 'Chand' (moon) as he used to practice hockey skills in the moonlight.

The three days of National Sports Day celebrations also saw felicitation of former sportspersons like

Viswanath Chowdhury

former International kabaddi player,

Srikanth Reddy

former basketball player, Dr. Akbhar Saheb who introduced table tennis in Anantapur in 1990s and SM Munavar Basha who represented Indian hockey team in 1964.

They also shared their experiences and motivated the kids to strive hard to play for the national team in their respective sport. Team Rani Rampal was declared the winner of sports day games by the dignitaries.
