NEW DELHI:

Indian Olympic Association

(

IOA

) president

Narinder Batra

and secretary general Rajeev Mehta on Tuesday met with sports minister Kiren Rijiju and discussed in detail the issues concerning the national sports federations (NSFs) and their derecognition by the sports ministry on the orders of the Delhi High Court, with special emphasis on the certain 'unsustainable' provisions of the 2011 National Sports Code.

However, in between the discussion, a possibility was explored to withdraw the Sports Code in its existing form on the grounds that some of its clauses need modification to suit the functioning of the IOA and NSFs, according to sources.

The withdrawal of the Code could buy the ministry time to bring about certain changes or incorporate provisions in the Code, as the legal battle in the High Court doesn't seem to be favouring them.

The next date of hearing in the NSFs' derecognition case is August 21 and the two-judge special bench of the court has directed the ministry to file a para-wise reply to petitioner

Rahul Mehra

's affidavit, in which the lawyer has detailed the non-compliance of the Code by almost all 57 NSFs. Batra and Mehta have told Rijiju that the age and tenure clauses were acting as impediments.
