NAGPUR: Title favourites and defending champions Nagpur girls stormed into the quarterfinals in the 45th
Maharashtra U-13 State Inter-District Basketball Championship, organized by the Maharashtra State Basketball Association in association with Poona District Basketball Association and NJ Academy, at Shiv Chattrapati Sports Complex Balewadi near Pune on Monday.
Nagpur girls carved out third successive victory to book their berth in the last eight stage . However, Nagpur boys went down fighting against Mumbai Central (39-40) by a solitary point.
In their last league match, Nagpur humbled
Jalgaon 58-2. Nagpur girls dominated from the word go and sailed to victory. Dhara Phate, Shreya Gupta and Suryashree Dhonadkar scored ten points each. They were ably supported by Mihika Meshram and Swati Wankhede, who netted eight points each.
In the quarterfinal, Nagpur will now clash with the winner of Thane and Aurangabad. Quarters will be played on Tuesday morning followed by the semis later in the evening.
Nagpur boys tried their best but fell short by just a point against Mumbai Central.
After losing first two quarters 6-13, 8-9, Nagpur boys bounced back and went on to win the third quarter 17-7. However, they could not maintain the tempo and surrendered in the last quarters.
For Nagpur, Taran Kakkad scored 18 points and kept his team in the hunt till the last but his effort went in vain. Vedant Tumne also contributed 8 points. For Mumbai Central, Karan Shah notched up 15 points.
