PUNE: Trust shooting to throw up many surprises. On Monday, 15-year-old Jonathan Antony first pushed Tokyo Games participant and former World No. 1 shooter Saurabh Chaudhary, and later defeated Paris Games bronze medallist Sarabjot Singh (both 23), to win gold at the National Games in Dehradun on Monday. As the young boy climbed the podium, an emotional Ancy Antony watched her son with pride and tears in her eyes. With the gold, the Bengaluru boy also paid tribute to the fighting spirit of her mother, who went against her family to make her son a shooter. "I am very emotional today. Three years ago, when I wanted my son to be a shooter, I didn't get support from my husband and my brother," the mother told TOI."I have been a National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadet and wanted my son to be a shooter. But it was easier said than done. I had to work four jobs to manage finances for Jonathan's shooting. I work at a corporate full time and took tuition along with packing spices for a company and working at a store part time," Ancy said.Ancy found a local coach Sharanendra KY at Hawk Eye academy in Bengaluru."Jonathan came to me three years ago. I saw that the family was in distress and I could see that Jonathan had this strong will to do something for his mother. He won his first state-level medal within five months of starting and the same year he qualified for the Nationals. He is a talented shooter and has a strong emotional drive which makes him work harder," the coach said. "I have also convinced his school to allow him to attend special classes so that Jonathan can train for eight hours every day," he added.
