MUMBAI: Jiwaji University won the deciding doubles tie against Saurashtra University to enter the second round of the West Zone Inter-University Tennis Championship, organised by HR College Sports Council, at the MSLTA, Cooperage on Tuesday. Yash Sharma won the opening singles tie against Akash Mehta to give No. 7 seeds Jiwaji the lead before Kiran Ghodasane levelled for Saurashtra after snatching the second singles against Sonu Kumar. But Sharma and Kumar surged to a substantial lead to beat Burhan Kapasi and Akash Mehta 9-3 in the deciding doubles.Anushka wins a thriller Mumbai lass Anushka Nair rallied to a thrilling 3-1 win to storm into the girls’ under-15 quarterfinals, in the 1st NSCI Open Squash Championship 2011 at the National Sports Club of India, Worli on Tuesday.
As the girls held centre stage, Nair overcame Neharika Balamurgan of Tamil Nadu 9-11, 11-8, 11-8, 14-12 in the most exciting match of the day, with every set a tight contest. Nair later advanced to the under-17 second round to complete a rewarding day.Sanjana-Shivani bag silver: Mumbai girls Sanjana Santosh and G Ruthvika Shivani bagged a silver in the under-15 event at the recently held East Java Junior Badminton Tournament held at Surabaya, Indonesia. The Sanjana-Shivani pair went down 18-21, 21-17, 21-10 to Cynthia Ayunidha and Rahmadhani Hastiyanti.
