KOLKATA: The Indian challenge in the mixed doubles event came to an end with both the Indian duo making an exit in the Round of 32 of the

on Tuesday.

The strong Indian duo of Achanta Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra had it easy against the Uzbekistan pair of Gufranova Rimma and Kenjaev Zokhid winning in straight games 3-0 (17-15, 11-5, 11-4). But they faltered against their next round Korean opponents Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha to go down tamely 3-0 (11-9, 11-8, 11-7).

The other Indian pair of Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Archana Kamath also began well by thrashing the Lebanese team of Khory Malak and Cheaib Dauud 3-0 (11-3, 11-5, 11-2). But they too were ousted in the next round losing to Chinese rivals Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha going down 3-0.

The Indian duo was outplayed in the first two games losing 7-11, 9-11. However, they did put up a challenge in the third before going down 11-13.

However, the men's team ensured a direct entry in the next championships in 2021 by beating Singapore 3-0 in the 5-8 classification in the champions division on Tuesday.

India lost to fourth seed Japan 1-3 in the quarterfinal on Monday despite Sathiyan beating Tomokazu Harimoto 11-4, 11-7, 12-10 to give the lead. But win against Singapore ensured India will finish in the top six of the tournament that booked them berth in 2021 championships.

The Indian women's team finished ninth after beating Malaysia 3-0.
