NEW DELHI: India's first Olympic gymnast to achieve fourth place at Rio 2016, Padma Shri Dipa Karmakar, has expressed optimism about India's sporting future and its potential to host the 2036 Olympics.

At the Khel Mahakumbh Samvad Sangam, Karmakar emphasized the importance of Indian coaches in athletic development.

“The basic training of an athlete is done by Indian athlete. An athlete should be ready to get all the help he can get from anybody, but basic training has to be done by someone who knows your body and your temperament for quite a long period. Indian coaches are today well equipped to train athletes and do have expertise to win medals at the 2036 Olympic Games”, said Dipa during her speech.

The second day of Khel Mahakumbh witnessed enthusiastic participation at the Sangam area in Prayagraj. Athletes from across the country competed in Kabaddi and Aainball events.

The Khel Mahakumbh is being held from February 6 to 13 at Sector 10, Mela Area, Sangam, Prayagraj. The event celebrates traditional Indian sports and promotes nationwide sportsmanship.

Over 200 Kabaddi and Aainball players from Gujarat demonstrated their skills during Friday's competitions.

Dipa Karmakar attended the event alongside her coach, Dronacharya Awardee Bishweshwar Nandi.
