Olympian Jyothi Yarraji honoured by INS Satvahana

NEW DELHI: INS Satvahana, under the Eastern Naval Command, honored Indian athlete Jyothi Yarraji for her groundbreaking achievement as the first female Olympic hurdler from India. The ceremony took place in Visakhapatnam, with the Secretary of the AP Athletics Association in attendance.During the event, Jyothi shared her inspirational journey, engaged with the audience by answering their questions, and motivated young naval personnel, including Agniveers, to chase their aspirations as per ANI.At the recent Paris Olympics, Jyothi Yarraji did not progress to the semifinals of the women's 100 m hurdles event, placing fourth in the repechage round heat one. In the repechage round, Jyothi recorded a time of 13.17 seconds, securing fourth place. However, only the top two athletes from each heat were granted the privilege of qualification.
Jyothi's Olympic participation was a significant milestone for India, as she became the first Indian athlete ever to represent the country in this event. She finished seventh in Heat 5 with a time of 13.16 seconds on Wednesday, narrowly missing out on a direct spot in the semifinals.The women's 100m hurdles event has been featured in every Olympics since 1972, but Jyothi's appearance at the Paris Olympics marked the first time an Indian athlete had been included on the start list.Earlier this year, Jyothi made history by winning India's first medal at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Tehran. She clinched the gold in the 60m hurdles, setting a new national record with a time of 8.12 seconds.
