NAGPUR: Ace long distance runner of the Orange City

Jyoti Chavan

has qualified for the World University Games scheduled to be held in Italy. The 30th Summer Universiade Games will take place at Napoli from July 3 to 14.


Jyoti finished runner-up in the 3000 metres steeplechase event which helped her book a ticket to Italy. She clocked 10 minutes and 46 seconds in the national trials held at KIIT University, Bhubaneshwar. The qualifying timing was 11 minutes.

, performed well and expectedly secure a berth in the Indian University squad. Jyoti's personal best is 10.35 seconds. She is being trained at Sai Training Centre in Bhopal.

Komal Jagdale, who represented Savitribai Fule University Pune, emerged champion with a timing of 10 minutes and 44 seconds.

Shital Bhagat from the same university failed to complete the race. During the Inter-University Athletics Meet, Shital had surpassed Jyoti and won the gold medal with a new record.

disappointed as she failed to in 5000m time trials. On Thursday, she will compete in the 10,000m time trial. Another local athlete Nikita Raut will participate in the time trial on Friday and there are lot of expectations from her.

The lifetime president of Nagpur District Athletics Association Baban Taywade, NMC sports committee chairman Nagesh Sahare, LR Malviya, Nagpur District Athletics Association secretary Sharad Suryavanshi, Umesh Naidu, SK Anthony and others have congratulated Jyoti Chavan for her selection in the Indian team.
