Maheshwari wins gold in Federation Cup athletics

PATIALA: National record holder Renjith Maheshwari of Tamil Nadu won the triple jump gold with a new meet record on the first day of the 16th Federation Cup National Senior Athletics Championships on Saturday.Maheshwari's leapt of 16.85m, which hecame up in his fifth and penultimate attempt, erased the old meet record of16.72m which he himself created in 2007.The silver went to ONGC's Arpinder Singh (16.20m) while the bronze was won by Raja Sekar of Tamil Nadu with a leapt of 15.79m.Except for the meet record of Maheshwari, itwas below par performance by the athletes in the other events of the day at theNIS tracks.Krishna Kumar Rane of Maharashtra won the men's 100m goldwith a timing of 10.51secs while the silver and bronze went to Shameer Mon ofKerala and Manikananad Raj of Andhra Pradesh with timings of 10.54s and 10.55srespectively.The women's 100m race was won Manisha of Haryana in11.93secs while Srabani Nanda (12.06s) of Orissa and Shirke Bhagyashree (12.28s)of Maharashtra were second and thirdrespectively.
