NAGPUR: International athlete Aniruddha Gujar had set the Nagpur University Sports Complex track on fire on Friday. When he was eyeing a place in the LIC's West Zone team, he stamped his authority to win the event =at the LIC 52nd Western Zonal Athletic Meet.
The 27-year-old Gujar from Satara completed the 100m dash in 11.68 seconds in the final session of the meet, which was organized alongside LIC 34th Western Zonal Volleyball tournament.
Shubham Shinde, who hails from Kolhapur, missed the top spot by a whisker. He finished runner-up with a timing of 11.89 seconds behind former National champion in 100m event.
The two-day meet was hosted by LIC of India, Nagpur Division, Nagpur.
City's former international ace athlete Madhuri Gurnule, who had qualified for the All India Games in 400m and 800m on Thursday itself, completed her 1500m run in 5 minutes and 38 seconds.
In the long jump, Dhiraj Mishra, who was the 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist in the long jump, took a 6.22 metres leap to bag first prize.
The final day's schedule of athletic events saw Shailendra Thakur of Thane clinching the first prize with best throw of 31 metres in hammer throw event and also in discuss throw with 33.48 metres.
In volleyball trials, renowned players of LIC All India team Asif Mullah of Satara was at his best. Besides him, Pankaj Kawale, Manish Jadhav, Mukul Kotangle of Nagpur Division also had a good day in the office. Shailendra Jedhe of Pune, H Solanki and L Gavit of Ahmedabad posted impressive performances.
Ashok Kapta, Raju Khandare and Naval Meshram handed over the final report to Western Zonal Authorities which will declare the list of 10 members team of Western Zone to participate in the LIC All India Games which is likely to be held in Chennai.
The prize distribution ceremony was orgnaized immediately after the final session. P Dhar, R (HRD) LIC Western Zonal Office was the chief guest and gave away the prizes to the players of athletic meet. MC Joshi, Neeti Bhaskara, DM Sukhdeve, Naval Meshram, G Bhosle, H Devadiga, Milind Rambhad and Abhay Pande were prominently present on the occasion.
