NEW DELHI: India's Avinash Sable finished fifth in the men's 3000m steeplechase at the Diamond League held on Sunday.
The 28-year-old Sable, participating in his second race of the season, completed the event in 8 minutes 21.88 seconds. This time was considerably slower than his personal best of 8:11.20s. In a previous Diamond League event in Rabat, Morocco on May 28, Sable finished 10th with a below-par time of 8:17.18 seconds. The wet track made it challenging for most participants to achieve fast times.
Soufiane El Bakkali from Morocco, the Olympic and world champion, emerged as the winner with a time of 8:09.84s, which was slower than his season's and personal best of 7:56.68s set in Rabat. Getnet Wale of Ethiopia, the 2019 Diamond League champion, secured the second position with a time of 8:12.27s, while his compatriot Abrham Sime claimed the third spot with a timing of 8:16.82s.
Avinash Sable, who won the silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, has been undergoing training abroad in preparation for the World Championships scheduled from August 19 to 27 in Budapest, Hungary.
