CHANDIGARH: Till December 2020,
Asian Games gold medallist
Arpinder Singh had high hopes of qualifying for the
Olympics
, but lack of training for almost a month due to second wave of Covid-19 and a subsequent knee pain, has all but blow up his chances of making it to the
Tokyo Games
.
Arpinder, who had been training with his coach P
Jayakumar in
Kerala after the first lockdown, was suddenly confined to the four walls of his rented apartment in the southern state, which witnessed a major surge in cases and subsequent deaths caused by the deadly virus.
"I was confined to an apartment 24*7 in Kerala, and was told that it was a matter of a week before we could return to training. Neither were any cooks allowed, so I had to manage food from outside,"
Arpinder
told TOI.
"Almost the whole of May was wasted, and when I started my training, the body was stiff and suddenly developed pain in my knee," he added.
The pain has dampened Arpinder's spirits ahead of the Inter-State National Athletics Championships, starting June 25 in Patiala, the last Olympic qualifying tournament, where he will be present merely as a spectator.
"The pain is still there, the physio has said it will take around three weeks of rehab for recovery, so my chances of Olympic qualification are gone," he said.
