This is indeed something that Charles Oliveira, the previous UFC lightweight champion, has very loud and clear saying to MMA fans to forget Conor McGregor's returning into the octagon. The comments thus came just after the mixed reception McGregor's recent visit to the White House has also gotten all over the combat sports industry.
The Notorious traveled to Washington, D.C. in celebration of St. Patrick's Day. During the holiday, he happened to hit headlines after holding a surprise mini-press briefing at the White House. While answering a wide range of questions in front of the media, McGregor handled topics from politics to admiration for former President Donald Trump. However, press secretary Karoline Leavitt quickly reminded reporters that it was an official visit- not a McGregor-led press conference.
Charles Oliveira fans took to social media to share their reactions
The appearance of the Irish fighter proved controversial and polarised both fans and fighters. Some admired McGregor for being capable of transcending sport with a fan saying, "Nobody will ever come close to the popularity of Conor McGregor in MMA." Others however were less impressed. He does not speak for us,” while a second exclaimed: “Khabib Nurmagomedov finished Conor in every way.”
In the midst of all this noise, Charles Oliveira professed his doubts about McGregor's future activity in the UFC. He spoke to Oddspedia saying, “To be honest, I don’t know why people are still talking about Conor McGregor. He’s done everything he wanted to do in the sport, and now he’s choosing to live his life the way he’s living it. We’ve been waiting for him to come back, and Michael Chandler has been waiting for about two years and he hasn’t shown up. I think fans should forget about Conor McGregor coming back; he’s not going to fight again.”
The White House visit also featured a meeting with Donald Trump, where both shared some friendly communications. In a video that went viral after the visit, McGregor praised Trump for a characteristic he found inspiring, though he's not very explicit about that particular aspect.
