The UFC Seattle match between Henry Cejudo and Song Yadong was put on halt following an unfortunate eye poke in the third round, leading to controversy and criticism. After an intense neck-to-neck two rounds, Cejudo was struck by an eye poke that caused immediate trouble with his vision. Referee Jason Herzog paused the fight, giving Cejudo five minutes to recover. While a ringside physician came into the octagon to check on him and Cejudo eventually gave a go-ahead for the next round, towards the end, Cejudo admitted to his coaches saying “I cannot f***ing see.”

Despite Cejudo’s best efforts to continue, the fight was ultimately stopped. After three full rounds, the judges’ scorecards looked like: 30-27, 29-28, and 29-28, favouring Song and eventually declaring him the winner by technical decision.

Post the fight, Cejudo posted a close-up photo of his injured eye, revealing the damage that had been done, captioning it - “diplopia, soft tissue damage, corneal abrasion,”. The post highlighted another caption “hE wANteD a wAy OuT” as a response to the critics who believed that Cejudo was using the eye poke just as an excuse to stop the fight.

Diplopia, or double vision, was the main issue Cejudo faced after the poke, which caused significant difficulty when he tried to continue with the fight. However, Referee Herzog chose not to penalize Song for the foul or deduct a point, and many felt this was a missed opportunity to impact the outcome. Had a point been deducted from Song, the fight could have ended in a draw instead of the technical decision victory.

Cejudo skipped the post-fight media appearances and went to a local hospital in Seattle for immediate treatment. Despite Cejudo’s appeal for a rematch with Song due to the abrupt and unsatisfying end to the fight, UFC CEO Dana White dismissed the idea, stating, “I just don’t want to see it again.”

The match had an unfortunate ending, especially with Song gaining momentum during the third round, but the eye poke brought in the final decision to the match instead.
