Gerrit Cole, the star pitcher of the New York Yankees, has established himself as one of the greatest strikeout pitchers in Major League Baseball. He has recorded 1,517 strikeouts since 2018, the most among all pitchers in this period. His strong pitching, reliability, and resilience to overcome setbacks make him an important part of the team's success.
Gerrit Cole's strikeout records since 2018
Gerrit Cole's career as a leading strikeout pitcher began in 2018 when he signed with the Houston Astros. His performance was much better in 2018 compared to previous years, and in 2019, he achieved a personal best of 326 strikeouts. It was the highest in the league during that season and helped him establish himself as a feared pitcher.
In December 2019, Gerrit Cole signed a massive nine-year, $324 million deal with the New York Yankees. He carried on his strikeout success with the New York Yankees, matching Ron Guidry's 1978 Yankees record of 257 strikeouts in 2022.
On October 4, 2022, at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, Gerrit Cole matched Ron Guidry's 1978 Yankees record of 257 strikeouts in a season in a game against the Texas Rangers. Following the game, Gerrit Cole addressed reporters regarding this achievement and how much he respects Ron Guidry.
He stated, "It's a very special number. Guidry was so good for us and so magical, and his record stood for so long."
Gerrit Cole's injury struggles in 2024
The 2024 season was not an easy one for Gerrit Cole as he had to deal with injuries. In March 2024, he experienced right elbow inflammation, forcing the Yankees to put him on the 60-day injured list. This kept him away from action until June 2024.
Gerrit Cole returned to action on June 19, 2024, pitching against the Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium. He pitched four innings and recorded five strikeouts.
His second game on June 25, 2024, against the New York Mets at Citi Field was not so good. He gave six runs in four innings and, surprisingly, did not record a single strikeout. This was an unusual off-night for Cole.
In Spite of these setbacks, Gerrit Cole came back strong. On June 30, 2024, he earned his season's first win against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre, demonstrating resilience.
