Wrigley Field capacity and seating breakdown: How many fans can fit inside the Cubs’ iconic ballpark

Wrigley Field is 100 percent not a modern mega–stadium, and that's precisely why it remains one of the crown jewels of baseball. Wrigley Field, the Cubs' home, is small and noisy and part of the scenery in the neighborhood around Wrigley, which few ballparks can match for atmosphere. Whether you are sitting in the first row or the upper deck, every game feels intimate, from the ivy-covered walls to the rooftop views across the street.

The official capacity of Wrigley Field for Chicago Cubs games is 41,649. That figure reflects the current post-renovation state of the space, which seeks to balance traditional and contemporary safety and comfort standards. Even though newer parks may seat more, nearly every seat at Wrigley is close to the action, which goes a long way toward explaining sellouts more than 100 years after opening.

Wrigley Field capacity and how it is calculated

Capacity of 41,649 on the books includes typical baseball seats in the lower bowl, upper decks, club areas, and outfield bleachers. Wrigley is relatively fixed in capacity, but it has some variability depending on how the event is set up, unlike domed or new stadiums.

As far as Cubs games are concerned, placement of broadcast equipment, temporary structures, or other items can affect the actual count sold but not change the number of seats. Even more limited seating is available when non-baseball events, such as concerts, take place, as the stage and field protection consume a significant portion of the seating area.


In the past, Wrigley was designed to hold many more fans. The highest attendance was in 1948, when 47,197 fans packed the park for World Series action. As for that figure, it's no longer possible under current safety rules, a reflection of how the ballpark has evolved even while retaining its character.

Seating layout explained, from field level to the bleachers

Wrigley Field has a variety of seating zones that are fairly unique. Those are the sections closest to the field known as the Club Box and Field Box, which wrap around the infield, offering the best views of the action. These sectors comprise much of the lower bowl and are among the most coveted seats in the park.

Above them is the Terrace Level, commonly known as level 200. They provide higher sightlines and, in some sections, partial overhead coverage, so they tend to be coveted, as the weather in Chicago is always unpredictable in the spring and fall.

The Upper Reserved and Upper Box sections are higher up. They provide a traditional ballpark view and lower prices, albeit farther from the field.

Right over the outfield walls are the famous Budweiser Bleachers, a staple of Wrigley Field lore. Bleachers are famous for their electric energy and also feature premium group areas, such as The Yard, perfect for any social or private events.
