There has been a recent confrontation between Atlanta Braves sensation Ronald Acuna Jr. and manager Brian Snitker that has made news. It began when Ronald Acuna Jr. posted something on social media after his teammate Jarred Kelenic made an error on the bases.
Ronald Acuna Jr. thought the treatment was unjust and posted his opinions on social media before taking the post down. Now, Braves icon Jon Smoltz has intervened with a level-headed and balanced reply, reminding us all that everyone makes mistakes and that team cohesion is paramount.
"If it were me…" - Ronald Acuna Jr.’s tweet stirs tension within the Braves team
The controversy started when Jarred Kelenic made an error on the field. He had hit the ball but did not run fast, assuming it was a home run. He did exit, but the manager, Brian Snitker, did not remove him from the game. Ronald Acuna Jr. appeared to be angered by this and posted on social media,
"If it were me, they would take me out of the game." This message quickly went viral on the internet, but Ronald Acuna Jr. removed it shortly afterward.
Fans and sports commentators began to discuss. Some were in favor of Acuna, stating that he should be treated like everyone else. Others believed the manager could make different decisions for different players. The incident highlighted how difficult it is to deal with a team of big personalities and talents.
"We all make mistakes" - Braves legend Jon Smoltz says both sides need understanding, not blame
Braves legend Jon Smoltz discussed the matter on a podcast. He did not take sides but offered advice to assist both the manager and the player. Jon Smoltz said Ronald Acuna Jr. likely acted on emotion, and posting such things online is not the best thing to do.
“There's no place to make that claim. You made an emotional claim that probably had to get deleted, which it did. You deal with that differently, you learn how to deal with it [as] we all make mistakes,” he said.
Jon Smoltz also defended Snitker. He said managers might play a certain way that they believe will benefit a player. It does not necessarily mean that one player is being treated differently from the other. Each player, each moment, and each situation is different.
His key message was regarding being united. Jon Smoltz is convinced that it is time for the Braves to unite, rather than break up. The team is having a bad season, and fixing things quietly and with respect will take them far.
