In the highly anticipated spring training matchup, the Seattle Mariners outfielder Julio Rodríguez faced off against the formidable pitcher Andrés Muñoz. The encounter of Rodríguez during the live batting practice with his teammate drew a lot of attention from fans, teammates, and coaches. The session showcased the elite pitching arsenal by Muñoz, giving Rodríguez first-hand taste of why the Mariners' closer is one of the best in the league.
Julio Rodríguez shares his take on Andrés Muñoz’s Dominance
Rodríguez didn’t hold back from praising the pitching skills shown by Muñoz after the teammates, intense face-off.
“Obviously an electric fastball, and like one of the best sliders I ever faced in my life,” he said.
“He’s just that guy. It’s very rare to find somebody that throws as hard and locates with the quality of pitches he has.” The center field also highlighted the ability of Muñoz to mix the pitches effectively.
“He can put them both as a strike, put them up in the zone, have the sinker also, sweep that slider across. Man, he’s one of the best teammates I’ve got,” Rodríguez said, appreciating Muñoz's skills.
While he appreciated the pitching, Rodríguez even joked that this would be his first and the last time facing Muñoz, calling the experience not comfortable.
Andrés Muñoz's new weapon and Julio Rodríguez preparation for 2025 season
Muñoz has been experimenting with the new kick changeup. It has already generated a lot of buzz in the camp. Though he did not use his weapon against Rodríguez, catcher Blake Hunt was in awe of the change.
“If he starts that thing in the zone, it’s unhittable,” Hunt said.
For Rodríguez to face, Muñoz was part of his plan to get more reps in the 2025 spring season.
“I’m definitely trying to get more at-bats, more reps, and prepare myself a little bit better to hit the ground running,” he explained.
“There isn’t any better training anywhere else in the league than against the pitchers we have got over here.” The batting practice session did not just highlight the dominance of Muñoz but also showcased Rodríguez's commitment to improving his game. With the Mariners gearing up for the 2025 season, the friendly rivalry can be a sign of some great things coming ahead.
