Rafael Devers refused to give up the position of third baseman for Alex Bregman

The $120 million deal between the Boston Red Sox and Alex Bregman not only turned heads in the baseball fraternity but also disappointed a few prominent MLB stars. However, the ripple effects of Alex Bregman’s inclusion to the Red Sox roster can already be seen before the spring training.

As reported by the reputed media outlet Associated Press. Devers was asked to move from the position of third baseman and go ahead as a designated hitter for the upcoming season. The 28-year-old Dominican Republic athlete straightforwardly refused the proposal made by the Red Sox. According to a clip shared by the official MLB page on X, Devers was seen saying no. The clip was captioned as

“Rafael Devers was adamant that third base is his position. When asked if he’d be open to being the DH, he gave a simple no.”

Rafael Devers said via an interpreter-

"Third base is my position. It's what I play. I don't know what their plans are. We had a conversation. I made it clear what my desires were. Whatever happens from here, I don't know."

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora even reacted to Devers' take on the team roster. Cora said-

"The decisions that are going to be made here about roster construction and about what we're going to do in the future, we're going to make sure we have the best team possible out there. (Devers) has a lot of pride. We know that. He feels like he's a third-baseman. He's going to work out as a third baseman and then we'll make decisions accordingly.”

He further mentioned-

"I think here it's not about Bregman or Devers or Cora. It's about the Red Sox. Whatever decision we make is for the benefit of the team."

A three-time All-Star Rafael Devers has been associated with the Boston Red Sox since 2017 and since then he has contributed to the success of the team. Recently, Alex Bregman was included to the Red Sox team roster for the next three years after ending his nine years stint with the Houston Astros.
