"They have the money": Boston Red Sox to work out on $100,000,000 plus deal with Alex Bregman

This one just in: The Red Sox are setting their sights on Bregman for some $100 million-plus deal, thus living up to their reputation for unrestrained spending and roster overhauls. If this is yet another hogwash rumor, then it would make for a rather costly caper, indeed. But be darned if the Sox can afford an extravagant signing-whether it's to clinch a new shortstop, or to spoil an extra plate of clam chowder down at Fenway. Right now, Bregman's whoever-price seems to be worth it!

With Bregman on the Radar, Will the Red Sox Finally Deliver on Big Promises?

Context first. Yes, Bregman is much more than just any ballplayer. He is a bona fide star, the kind who sends chills down the spine of pitchers at every level. The 2021 All-Stars and two-Time Silver Slugger winners; four years into his Major League career with sustained power and on-base presence, Bregman has built a reputation of delivering in moments that matter. The excitement that comes from Bregman-whacking home runs and making clutch plays-could provide just the rejuvenation the Sox desperately need right now.



But it is not just numbers and stats. He has the attitude and swag that might be just what the Red Sox need at this moment. After all, there is only that much energy you can extract from a healthy Trevor Story (who, honestly, may be something of a myth at this point). Respectfully, with all due deference to Story, let's be candid here: Surely nobody is actually talking about Story miraculously recovering and being the power hitter that is so desperately needed to fill in for Tyler O'Neill's 31 homers before heading to Baltimore. "The price for Bregman would be steep, well past $100 million. And the length of the contract — he is reportedly looking for six years — is cause for pause. But they should sign him. They truly should. They have the money. They need his aforementioned attributes"



On the other hand, Bregman is the real deal. He is reliable, he has presence, and being offered a six-year contract really does help. While the Red Sox have supposedly promised big moves for the future, it becomes evident that they have to sign a player like Bregman in order to back up their words and show that they are, in fact, serious about winning.

The fan base, traumatized by watching J.D. Martinez and Mookie Betts walk away, and deserve a winner who can rekindle their belief in pennant-chase magic. It's no longer merely about contesting for a high-priced superstar. It is also about building up goodwill with a fan base that has been burned by proclamations of "we'll spend when the time's right." If they want to ask these fans to trust them again, bringing in Bregman—and doing it with a deal that proves their commitment to winning—sounds like the most brilliant play.

So Sox fans, start the champagne... if the Bregman deal gets done! Fingers crossed!
