The San Diego Padres have brought their off-season back to life with their recent addition. As the reputed MLB team brings the Venezuelan catcher Elias Diaz back home, the Padres look quite serious with respect to their catching situation. As the winter off-season is gradually coming to its end, Elias Diaz was signed by the Padres for the 2025 season.

The signing of Elias Diaz marks the Padres’ first free-agent deal of the team during the ongoing off-season.

Elias Diaz signs a one-year deal with the San Diego Padres


The San Diego Padres announced a one-year contract with their previous alum Elias Diaz on Thursday. Reportedly, the deal also has a mutual option after the 2025 season. The official page of the San Diego Padres on X mentioned-

“We have signed catcher Elias Díaz to a one-year contract through the 2025 season with a mutual option for 2026.”

The Padres went ahead with their first free agent addition with respect to Elias Diaz after including the former Boston Red Sox pitcher Ron Marinaccio on their roster. While serving as a backup to athlete Kyle Higashioka, Diaz went on to bat .190 with a.720 OPS over a span of more than 10 games.

Back in 2024, Elias Diaz pulled off a great baseball season after he was relieved by the MLB team Colorado Rockies in August. Keeping the defensive prowess of Elias Diaz in mind, the San Diego Padres have made the best decision for the upcoming 2025 season.

Elias Diaz talks about the sportsman mentality


Back in June 2024, during an interview with the MLB Network, Elias Diaz opened up on one of the most important aspects of an athlete’s mindset. The 34-year-old MVP recipient said-

“I believe everybody has to have the same mindset. Every day is a new day and we have to get better. We need to do it in this game.”

Elias Diaz went on to become an overnight sensation after clinching his first MVP award during his stint with the Colorado Rockies back in 2023. While talking about the crazy fan followed by his MVP recognition, Diaz even mentioned that he wants more of it now. He said-

“The All-Star Game, the [All-Star Game] MVP, and all that kind of stuff after last year -- it’s been incredible. Personally, I want more.”

While talking about designated hitting, Diaz even said-

“I’ve gotten used to it. The mentality has to be different. When I DH, I just worry about hitting.”

Elias Diaz made headlines after he decided to go back to the San Diego Padres. Reportedly, the versatile catcher would be representing the Padres for the upcoming season. Elias Diaz was introduced to Major League Baseball in 2015 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and since then he has been a part of significant teams including the Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres.
