Red Sox lands NL Rookie finalist Caleb Durbin in multi-player trade with Brewers

The Boston Red Sox and Milwaukee Brewers have signed a blockbuster six-player trade, headlined by infielder Caleb Durbin, a Boston team source told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand on February 09. The move sends three infielders and a draft pick to Boston, while the Milwaukee Brewers receive left-hander Kyle Harrison and two others in what shapes up to be one of the most significant late-season transactions.

The 25-year-old Durbin made an impression last season with a .256/.334/.387 slash line while splitting time at mostly third base, second base, and shortstop. His versatility adds an immediate depth to the Red Sox infield that has been in flux following the recent moves in its roster. Monasterio and Seigler are another way Boston can strengthen its middle-infield options, while the extra draft pick provides future flexibility for the front office. With Durbin already proven at the major league level and coming off a near-breakthrough season, Boston will hope he can build on that production and become a regular fixture in its lineup.

On the other hand, the Milwaukee Brewers are going to get Harrison, infielder David Hamilton, and lefty prospect Shane Drohan. Harrison, 24, was a major part of the return of Boston when the club traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants last season and has logged an ERA of 4.39 in 42 appearances, including 37 starts, in his MLB debut in 2023. Drohan, 27, was the No. 30 prospect in Boston last year according to MLB Pipeline, which gives the Brewers some extra depth in their pitching staff, while Hamilton gives Milwaukee a versatile infield option.

The deal is part of Milwaukee's ongoing interest in shoring up its pitching staff, including a promising young infielder such as Durbin. Once it is confirmed, the trade will represent an interesting roster shuffle for both clubs as spring training begins and teams get themselves into position for the long grind of the upcoming season.
