Mookie Betts confident in shortstop role despite Manny Machado’s concerns over tough transition

Mookie Betts is embracing a significant positional change, but not everyone believes it's the correct decision. Having established himself as a Gold Glove right fielder, Betts is set to make shortstop his new full-time position for the Los Angeles Dodgers. But San Diego Padres superstar Manny Machado has questioned whether Betts should adopt one of baseball's most challenging positions, doubting whether the switch is worth the physical strain.Betts initially moved into the shortstop position in 2024 when the Dodgers lost Gavin Lux to injury. Although inexperienced, he rose to the challenge and played 126 games at shortstop, with a.952 fielding average. Now, he is completely committed to making it his permanent position in 2025, saying he is confident he can make the adjustment and thrive.Betts said, “I mean I am not sure yet i think uh regarding baseball I am not sure yet, I know I have trained, I have prepared, I have done any and everything I can to be successful and so I know for sure I am going lay it all out there on the line and I will be more than happy going to sleep at night knowing that I prepared and did everything possible to be successful to play shortstop.”His commitment indicates he's not merely attempting to silence critics—he's validating himself.While Betts is up to the challenge, Machado questions the move. Having played shortstop himself, Machado appreciates the wear the position puts on a player. He said, “I don’t know why he’d want to do that. It’s crazy what he’s trying to do. He’s a Gold Glover. He’s such a good outfielder. Why go play such a demanding position? It takes so much of a toll on your body.”Machado's worries are understandable, as shortstop demands constant action, quick reflexes, and infield leadership. It's a physically and mentally draining position, and there are questions whether Betts' switch will affect his offensive production.In spite of skepticism, Betts himself is not perturbed. His ability to accept new challenges is what has characterized his career, and he views this shift as another chance to shine.
