MLB players to become AI-powered avatars in groundbreaking fan engagement agreement
Major League Baseball players have approved a technology company making live interactive AI versions of familiar stars, digital avatars engineered for conversations with fans. Under the new partnership, athletes can license their likeness, voice, and personality for use in apps, games, and social platforms. Proponents have characterized the shift not only as a landmark in contemporary fan interaction but also as an opening for renewed commercial possibilities for athletes as well.
The licensing agreement, announced this week, will see MLB Players, Inc., the licensing arm that represents thousands of current pro players, partnering with the avatar firm Genies to create the virtual experiences. The plan envisions fans being able to hold conversations with AI versions of their favorite athletes, receive customized messages, and interact with digital collectibles built around real player identities.
Money earned from the program will be governed by the standard group licensing framework managed by MLB Players, Inc. Arguably, this means that players who opt in might earn a payday when fans subscribe to the program, buy bespoke content, or engage with official virtual merchandise. While financial terms of the deal are not being disclosed, both sides are calling it a long-term move that will let athletes access more ways to engage fans beyond traditional media.
Those seeking to protect privacy have similarly noted the need for large quantities of personal data for AI systems to have any chance of sounding credible. Keeping some control over the use of the players' voices and images will be an important part of the success of the project. The companies say such participation will be voluntary and that what the avatars are allowed to do or say is governed by rigorous approval processes.

How the technology partnership will work
Under the terms of the agreement, Genies can create artificial intelligence avatars in the likeness of MLB players who have opted in. The figures will allegedly interact with fans via AI-generated text and voice responses that have been trained from approved materials. The aim, the company executives say, is for genuine interactions that feel personal but are completely under the control of licensing guidelines.Money earned from the program will be governed by the standard group licensing framework managed by MLB Players, Inc. Concerns about ethics, privacy, and authenticity
There is a lot of hype around the idea, but it brings up some serious concerns. Experts say that this could blur the line between authentic connection and automated marketing by creating digital copies of real people. Without proper safeguards, fans might not be able to tell whether they are chatting with a real-life person or a computer program. Those seeking to protect privacy have similarly noted the need for large quantities of personal data for AI systems to have any chance of sounding credible.
