Miami Marlins’ outfielder Avisail Garcia announces retirement at 34 after 13 MLB seasons

Avisail Garcia is officially done with Major League Baseball. At 34, the veteran outfielder announced his retirement after injuries erased any realistic path back to the field. The decision ends a 13-season career defined by a brief peak, multiple resets, and a finish shaped by physical decline.

Garcia framed his announcement around gratitude, but the circumstances were clear. A full season lost to back surgery, a release from the Miami Marlins, and limited future opportunities made retirement unavoidable. Once an All-Star and middle-of-the-order presence, Garcia saw his role shrink as his health deteriorated. His exit was quiet, even if the road to it was not.

In his Instagram post, Garcia stated: “Today I formally announce the end of my career in Major League Baseball after 12 seasons of dedication and hard work. Thank you to God for the blessing of fulfilling my childhood dream—of playing baseball at its highest level.” He also thanked his family, his representation at Mato Sports Management, and former teammates and coaches.


MLB Trade Rumors reported that Garcia, 34, chose to retire after a back injury sidelined him for the entire 2025 season. CBS Sports added that he missed the year while recovering from surgery to repair a fracture and disc issue in his lower back. RotoBaller similarly confirmed that the free-agent outfielder announced his retirement Monday after 13 seasons across five teams.

Why did Avisail Garcia choose retirement

Garcia’s decision followed a prolonged stretch of injuries and declining performance. He underwent postseason surgery in October 2024 to address a fracture and disc injury in his lower back. Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reported in February 2025 that Garcia was expected to miss the entire season, with a possible return targeted for Venezuelan winter ball the following offseason. CBS Sports echoed that plan, though Garcia ultimately chose retirement instead.

Before the injury, the Marlins released Garcia in June 2024. The team designated him for assignment, a move reported by MLB.com, with manager Skip Schumaker saying: “Avisaíl has been a consummate professional during his time with the Marlins.”

Schumaker added, “When he came back, we just made a decision to designate him and kind of move on. But that's never an easy conversation, especially a guy that has 10 years in the big leagues and done a lot in the game.”

If unclaimed, Miami remained responsible for the remainder of his 2024 salary, $12 million in 2025, and a $5 million buyout for 2026. ESPN reported the total obligation at approximately $24.6 million. MLB Trade Rumors noted that any comeback would likely have been limited to minor league offers, reinforcing the logic behind Garcia’s decision.

Avisail Garcia’s early career and rise to prominence

Garcia signed with the Detroit Tigers as a 16-year-old international free agent from Venezuela in 2007 and developed into a top offensive prospect by 2012. He made his MLB debut on August 31, 2012, contributing to Detroit’s pennant run.

In 2013, he was traded to the Chicago White Sox in a three-team deal that sent Jake Peavy to Boston and Jose Iglesias to Detroit. Garcia became Chicago’s everyday right fielder for most of the next five seasons. After missing most of 2014 with a labrum injury, he rebounded in 2015 and posted five straight seasons with double-digit home runs.

His best year came in 2017, when he hit .330/.380/.506 with 18 home runs in 561 plate appearances, earned an All-Star selection, and finished second in the AL batting race behind Jose Altuve. FanGraphs and Baseball Reference valued the season at over 4 WAR.

Non-tendered after 2018, Garcia signed a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Rays and hit .282/.332/.464 with 20 home runs. He helped Tampa Bay reach the postseason and hit .300 with a home run in five playoff games.

He later signed a two-year, $20 million contract with the Milwaukee Brewers. After a down 2020 season, Garcia rebounded in 2021 with a career-high 29 home runs, batting .262/.330/.490 with 86 RBI while helping Milwaukee win the NL Central.

Avisail Garcia’s tenure with the Miami Marlins

Garcia signed a four-year, $53 million contract with the Marlins ahead of the 2022 season, with a club option for 2026. His production never matched expectations. Over two and a half seasons, he hit .217/.260/.322 with 13 home runs.

In 2024, he appeared in just 18 games, batting .240/.255/.380 before landing on the injured list with a hamstring issue on April 28. He was designated for assignment on June 4 and released five days later, closing the final chapter of his MLB career.
