Jose Iglesias, a fans’ favorite shortstop and singing sensation from the Mets, could not make a place on the roster earlier this year and it is largely due to an ‘inflexible roster’ situation. The Mets’ loss has become Iglesias’ gain as he strikes a $4 million deal with the Padres for a Minor League.

Jose Iglesias has joined the Padres following Mets’ muddled stance

The Padres have picked up free agent Jose Iglesias for a Minor League in the latest turn of events. Both parties have been in talks after the Mets didn’t show inclination for Iglesias despite his satisfactory run in the 2024 season. The Mets know it is their loss, but they are helpless because of an imbalance in their roster that has made it somewhat ‘inflexible’.

As per the report by Steve Adams at MLB Trade Rumors, the team’s catcher Francisco Alvarez and to-be-confirmed backup infielder Luisangel Acuna are out from optioning considerations and that situation has forced the Mets not to re-hire Iglesias. Mets’ muddled stance on Iglesias also emerges from the inconsistent performance of Iglesias on parameters like hard-hit rate, average exit velocity, and barrel rate, mentions the report.

Considering that, the Mets felt there was a scant possibility of Iglesias re-exhibiting 2024’s brilliance at the pitch leading to their decision to drop Iglesias for the new season.

Jose Iglesias has raised Minor League’s standard income bars with the Padres’ contract

The OG ‘OMG’ sensation of the Mets, as Iglesias is popular among fans, has all the reasons to sing livelier tunes with the new Minor League deal coming his way. His new contract with the Padres is going to fetch him an annual salary of $3MM. It is exclusive of $1MM that he will be taking home as incentives.

According to the Zip Recruiters’ salary data for March 2025, the average salary drawn by top earners among the Minor League rookies is $65,500 in the year 2025. Hence, the new contract has certainly brought good news for the ex-Mets shortstop.

Jose Iglesias remained off the scene for the whole of the 2023 season, but he returned for the 2024 season, making the correct moves. A wholesome entertainer that he is, he continues to enthrall the audience not only with the power-packed performance on the field but also with his croony music that has made him fans’ favorite. His ‘OMG’ number was an anthem in the Mets camp; certainly, Iglesias will be missed by his former teammates.
