The Boston Red Sox are running out of easy answers in the infield, and the pressure is building fast. With Alex Bregman gone and no clear replacement locked in, second and third base remain wide open heading into 2026. Yes, the team added Willson Contreras, but that move only shifted the problem instead of fixing it. Contreras is being asked to learn first base, while the rest of the infield still looks unsettled.Right now, the Red Sox have more outfielders than spots and not enough trusted options on the dirt. That imbalance has pushed the front office toward tougher choices. One of those choices involves Marcelo Mayer, a player with huge upside but real durability concerns. According to longtime MLB observer Jim Dalfino, asking Mayer to carry a full-time infield role too soon could backfire. His warning has sparked debate inside and outside Boston.

Marcelo Mayer health questions create new problem at Red Sox third base

Jim Dalfino made his stance clear while discussing Mayer’s role. He said, “I disagree on platooning Mayer. If he is part of your future or the future includes trading him, he needs to play every day. I’m on record saying I don’t want to give him the keys to third because I don’t trust him being healthy for 150 games.”
The concern is not about talent. It is about how much Mayer’s body can handle. Mayer has never played more than 91 games in a professional season. A wrist injury cut his 2025 year short, and that history cannot be ignored. Still, Boston does not have many clean alternatives. Ceddanne Rafaela can play the infield, but moving him out of center field weakens the team’s defense.
Jarren Duran once played second base, but he has not done that regularly since 2018. Defensively, Mayer showed promise at third base in 2025. He finished with plus defensive value and only one error in limited chances. Offensively, consistency remains a work in progress. Dalfino believes the safer path would be to let Mayer start in the minors and build rhythm. The problem is timing. Boston may not have that luxury. The team is exploring outside help. Red Sox reporter Jen McCaffrey reported that the club has been active in trade talks for an infielder. Names linked include Ketel Marte, Nico Hoerner, Isaac Paredes, and C.J. Abrams. Nothing has materialized yet. Internal options like Romy González and David Hamilton exist, but they do not inspire confidence for a playoff push. For now, the Red Sox are stuck in between. Betting on Mayer feels risky. Doing nothing feels worse.
