The first game of Konnor Griffin felt bigger than just baseball. He did not look nervous. Instead, he looked ready.

But in the stands, it was a very different story. His mother Kim and his wife Dendy, both watching closely, could not hide their emotions. As Griffin came up for his first at-bat against the Baltimore Orioles, both looked tense. Moments later, everything changed when he smashed the ball to the wall for an RBI double in a tight 5-4 win.

His teammate Paul Skenes had already spoken highly of him earlier this year. Back in February, he told ESPN, “Goes to church every Sunday, doesn’t cuss, doesn’t do any of that stuff, married at 19. After Friday’s game, Skenes added, “He’s a difference maker, it was very apparent today.” Before the debut, Griffin’s mother had asked fans for patience. She wrote on X, “Now in my momma voice, if you can’t say something nice don’t say nothing at all! Y’all gotta let him grow and show him some grace!!” That message came just before one of the biggest days of her son’s life.

For now, things have started in the best way possible. The Pirates moved to 4-3 with the win and will face the Orioles again on Saturday. It is just one game, but Griffin has already given fans something to believe in.
