Kazuma Okamoto reveals how his daughter helped him pick the Toronto Blue Jays in $60 million move

Kazuma Okamoto is officially a Toronto Blue Jay. On Tuesday in Toronto, the Japanese slugger was introduced by the team after signing a four-year, $60 million contract. The deal was completed after he was posted by Nippon Professional Baseball’s Yomiuri Giants, where he spent his entire 11-season career.

The signing quickly turned heads across baseball. Many teams were chasing Kazuma Okamoto. But during his first press talks, he shared a personal reason behind his choice. He said his young daughter played a big part in why he picked Toronto.

Kazuma Okamoto spoke to reporters on Tuesday, with comments first reported by MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson. During the media session, he revealed a quiet moment at home that helped decide his future.

Through interpreter Gino Gordon, Kazuma Okamoto said he showed all 30 MLB team logos to his daughter. Then he asked her which one she liked most.

“She pointed at the Blue Jays,” Kazuma Okamoto said. “That stayed in my mind.”

He also said he already liked Toronto. He spoke about the city, the team’s strength, and the support he felt was there. But his daughter’s reaction made the choice feel right.

The Blue Jays completed the deal just before Kazuma Okamoto’s posting window closed. The 29-year-old joins Toronto after building a powerful résumé in Japan.



He is a career .274 hitter with 277 home runs and 872 RBIs. He hit at least 30 home runs in six different full NPB seasons.

In the 2025 season, which was cut short by injury, Kazuma Okamoto still hit .327 with 15 home runs and 49 RBIs in 69 games. His OPS stood at 1.014, showing his strong power and plate control.

Kazuma Okamoto also spoke about watching the Blue Jays closely before signing. He followed their 2025 postseason run, where Toronto reached the World Series and lost a tight Game 7.

“I was very impressed by the play,” he said. “But more than that, I was impressed by the fans. They cheered loudly. You can feel the love for the Blue Jays.”

He added that he never imagined he could play in such a place. “I didn’t really understand the possibility that I could be part of a team like this,” he said.

Toronto’s front office has been aggressive this offseason. Before signing Kazuma Okamoto, the Blue Jays added starting pitcher Dylan Cease.

They also brought in relievers Tyler Rogers and Cody Ponce. Kazuma Okamoto becomes the fourth major addition to the projected 2026 roster.

The move also shifts Toronto’s focus. The club had been seen as a favorite to re-sign Bo Bichette.

With Kazuma Okamoto now in place, attention may turn toward the market for star outfielder Kyle Tucker.

For Kazuma Okamoto, though, the choice already feels settled. It started with family, continued with fans, and ended with a new chapter in Major League Baseball.
