There's always so much pressure in sports, both on and off the field. Boston Red Sox right fielder Jarren Duran recently spoke candidly about his personal life, paying tribute to the importance of mental health. His story shines through in the Netflix documentary series The Clubhouse: A Year with the Red Sox.
Jarren Duran's battle with mental health
In the fourth episode of the series, "Still Alive," Jarren Duran candidly shares the challenges he faced during his initial days of playing in Major League Baseball. Drafted in 2018 and debuting with MLB in 2021, Jarren Duran battled massive attempts at acclimatizing himself to the outfield position and dealing with the enormity of pressure that was poured upon him.
The aggressive observation by the media and the public propelled him to a deep state of depression. Jarren Duran remembers one of the low points of the 2022 season when he was buried under pressure from himself and media criticism. He has also recalled that he tried to commit suicide.

It takes someone with courage and being open and being real to do that."
The Red Sox have made it their mission to maintain the emotional well-being of players. Red Sox President and CEO Sam Kennedy said, "Jarren Duran's willingness to share his story is a courageous act beyond baseball. By speaking openly, he's permitting those out there who might be struggling to see that they, too, are not alone and seeking help is not only OK but necessary."
