J.K. Simmons sends Marvel fans into nostalgia after dramatic Spider Man exchange at New York Mets game

J.K. Simmons gave Marvel fans a fun surprise during a New York Mets game at Citi Field this week. The actor, who is famous for playing J. Jonah Jameson in the Spider-Man movies, was caught on camera reacting to a fan dressed as Spider-Man during the game. As the costumed hero appeared nearby, Simmons stayed fully in character and jokingly demanded that Spider-Man be removed from the stadium.

The funny moment quickly grabbed attention online because it reminded fans of Simmons’ legendary role in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. In those films, Simmons played Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson, the loud newspaper boss who constantly called Spider-Man a “menace.” During the Mets game, he once again pointed angrily at Spider-Man and shook his fist, making the crowd laugh.

The moment felt even more special for longtime Spider-Man fans because Simmons has continued playing J. Jonah Jameson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He returned in Spider-Man: Far From Home during the film’s post-credit scene, where his character revealed Peter Parker’s identity to the world. He later appeared again in Spider-Man: No Way Home alongside Tom Holland’s Spider-Man story.

Speaking earlier about his Marvel return, Simmons said, “Well, I only really appeared on screen with Tobey [Maguire]. Even people in the industry, in the media are taken aback when I say I have never met Tom Holland.”

He also shared his love for both versions of the franchise. Simmons explained, “So obviously I have great affection for what Sam [Raimi] and Tobey and I and the gang did, Kirsten [Dunst], everybody in those films, and my participation in the latest iteration is much more limited.”

The actor then praised director Jon Watts and the newer Spider-Man movies by saying, “But having said that, I love what Jon [Watts] is doing with it too, and I love the way that they have kept it fresh without completely losing what made Spider-Man appealing in the first place.”
