In 2019, she turned professional and joined the Fujitsu Red Wave in the Women’s Japan Basketball League. The move marked a major step. Professional basketball in Japan offers few shortcuts, and places are earned through consistency. Standing 5 foot 11, Tanaka played as a forward and became known for her reliability rather than highlight moments.

Over four seasons with the Red Wave, she built trust within the team. Coaches valued her decision-making. Teammates relied on her composure. In her final season before retiring in 2023, Tanaka shot 47.7 percent from the field and 69.9 percent from the free-throw line across 28 games. The numbers reflected preparation and control, not flash.

Her retirement came quietly. There were no long announcements and no public farewell. She stepped away from professional basketball without noise, closing one chapter on her own terms. At the time, her name remained largely within Japanese basketball circles.

That changed in February 2024 when Ohtani announced his marriage through a simple social media post. While the news traveled quickly, Tanaka remained the same. During a press conference, Ohtani described her as a normal Japanese woman, a line that matched the life she had lived before public attention arrived.

Since then, her appearances have been limited and measured. Whether walking beside Ohtani at official events or supporting him from the stands, Tanaka has carried herself with quiet confidence. Being a former basketball player and now the wife of one of the greatest baseball players, Mamiko Tanaka has built a life shaped by hard work and balance.
