Former Major League Baseball pitcher Trevor May has responded to NFL prospect Travis Hunter's recent tweets concerning baseball's Shohei Ohtani. At a recent NFL scouting event, Travis Hunter was asked about his two-way playing style and how Shohei Ohtani has played in baseball in comparison to him.
“Probably… what I do in football, because it’s a lot on your body. You know Ohtani, he’s a great player, but you gotta do a lot in football,” said Hunter.
Trevor May, who played for teams like the Minnesota Twins and New York Mets, disagreed with Travis Hunter’s comment. In an MLB Network Radio interview, Trevor May said, "I'm sorry, Travis, I see where you're going with it, but no."
Trevor May recognized the skill and endurance needed to play both cornerback and wide receiver but argued that pitching and hitting are entirely different challenges.
He highlighted Shohei Ohtani’s rare achievement, comparing it to Babe Ruth’s historic two-way success. May stated, “To be as good as Shohei Ohtani is at both is the most impressive thing in sports, ever.”

Shohei Ohtani, a player for the Los Angeles Dodgers has become popular for his ability to do both, hit and pitch at the top level. In the 2024 season, although he was unable to pitch due to an injury in the elbow, Ohtani was voted the National League MVP unanimously.
He achieved a remarkable 50-50 season, with hitting 54 home runs and 59 bases stolen. Ohtani underwent elbow surgery at the end of the 2023 season, which prevented him out for 2024. He will most likely return to the mound later this year.
On February 15, 2025, during Spring Training, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts observed Shohei Ohtani’s bullpen session. Later, he commented on Ohtani’s return, via a media interaction. Roberts suggested that while Ohtani can remain productive, his offensive statistics might decrease as he resumes pitching duties.
“I thought it was great. Just kind of seeing his delivery, which was really good, the clean arm stroke. … Gosh, the velocity, the ball was coming out really good. I think he seems pretty pleased with it, and the command was really good. So really positive,” Roberts said.
This session was an important step in Ohtani’s recovery from elbow surgery in late 2023. Fans are excited for his return to pitching, as he is known for being great at both pitching and hitting.
