Elly De La Cruz sets Major Goal for 2025 as Cincinnati Reds aim for Playoff Push
Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz was one of the league's most dynamic players during the 2024 season, receiving an All-Star nod and pacing the majors with 67 stolen bases. Yet for all his accomplishments, De La Cruz is focusing on a crucial area to improve on in 2025: reducing his strikeouts. As the Reds vie for a postseason berth, his improvement could prove to be a difference-maker.
Though De La Cruz wowed with his power and speed last year—25 home runs and 76 runs batted in—his elevated strikeout rate was an eye-sore. He paced all of MLB with 218 strikeouts, something he is hell-bent on decreasing in 2025.
"Yeah, I'd like to reduce [strikeouts]. I worked on it," De La Cruz replied. "I am going to continue to work and gain [more] experience."
The Reds' coaching staff, including hitting coach Pat Valaika, has stressed the importance of making contact and staying disciplined at the plate. If De La Cruz can reduce his strikeout rate without sacrificing his power and speed, he might become one of the most balanced offensive threats in the league.
The Reds came in fourth place in the National League Central division in 2024, but hopes are buoyant for 2025. New manager Terry Francona, a two-time World Series title winner, adds leadership and playoff experience that could transform the team's fortunes.
Besides that, the Reds strengthened their line-up by making a deal to get pitcher Brady Singer from the Kansas City Royals, gaining significant depth to the rotation. The Reds will also get Matt McLain and Christian Encarnacion-Strand back from the injured list, two contributors they anticipate seeing considerable contributions from.
With De La Cruz fine-tuning his strikeout totals and the Reds bolstering some areas of weakness, Cincinnati looks like it can advance in the divisional chase.
Elly De La Cruz has already proven himself to be a star player, but his dedication to reducing strikeouts in 2025 may take his game to the next level. Should he accomplish it, the Cincinnati Reds will not only reap the benefits of his enhanced performance but also enhance their chances of fighting for a postseason spot. With respective reinforcements and a new manager on board, the Reds might be a force to reckon with in 2025.
