Baseball fans are left in a quandary over a sudden announcement by Jonathan India, the new infielder of the Kansas City Royals: He is ready to take some reps in the outfield this spring. Yes, you've heard that correctly-Jonathan India, the name synonymous with second base over the last few seasons, is expanding his horizons to the vast green expanse of the outfield. It looks and feels risky-a slider in the dirt-but who knows when a bit of versatility comes in handy?

Infield? Outfield? Jonathan India Might Just Be Everywhere This Spring!

Acquired from the Cincinnati Reds in a trade this offseason, India made headlines last season for his bat alone-he's got this nice little power-speed combo that can drop jaws. After a breakout 2021 season that won him National League Rookie of the Year honors, India had a slight dip in numbers in 2022 but retained a lot of pop and potential in his bat. The 26-year-old looks to be flexing some extra muscle-not just in the batter's box but also in terms of adding new defensive responsibilities. Well, why the outfield? India explains, "The Royals are a transitioning ballclub. Now that they are coming off a season of second place in the American League Central, they are looking to build on that momentum.
The Royals did well in 2024, getting into the American League Division Series before falling short against the mighty Yankees. With that taste of the playoffs fresh in their minds, the front office has some big expectations for 2025, and India appears eager to do whatever he can to help them attain it."
India's versatility is certainly something the Royals would want to consider to balance their roster, especially in an infield filled with members. Putting in some extra work in the outfield gives Mike Matheny the freedom to mix and match accordingly on his lineup card. Besides, the Royals have always prided themselves on defense; therefore, India adding to the team with that "flexible" reputation will be an asset.
