Carlos Correa’s 2026 season is likely over after the Houston Astros shortstop suffered a serious ankle injury that is expected to require surgery. The three-time All-Star shared the update with reporters on Wednesday, only one day after missing Houston’s 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Daikin Park. According to Correa, the injury happened while he was taking swings in the batting cage before Tuesday’s game.

The 31-year-old said he felt and heard a “pop” in his left ankle during a swing and immediately fell to the ground because he could not place weight on his foot. Correa told reporters he is expected to undergo surgery later this week. Speaking honestly about the difficult moment, he said, “It’s tough. Not what I was expecting. Now it’s time to deal with it, face it head-on and focus on the rehab.”

The news comes at a hard time for Houston, especially as the Astros are trying to recover from a slow start to the season. Correa had started to find his rhythm again after returning to Houston from the Minnesota Twins last year. Through 32 games this season, he was batting .279 with three home runs and 16 RBIs.

Even while talking about the setback, Correa stayed hopeful. He told reporters, “I might not understand it now, but I’m going to keep moving forward, trusting the Lord’s plan. I’m going to keep a positive attitude. I know it comes at a moment where I’m falling in love with baseball more than ever.”

Correa played an important role in the Astros’ success during his earlier years with the team, including their 2017 World Series championship run. Last season, he hit .276 with 13 home runs and 52 RBIs across games with both Minnesota and Houston after the trade reunited him with the Astros.

Houston has already started making changes to cover the shortstop position. Nick Allen started there on Tuesday, while Shay Whitcomb was called up from Triple-A on Wednesday. Braden Shewmake was also listed as the starting shortstop for Wednesday’s series finale against the Dodgers. Veteran infielder Jose Altuve was not in the lineup on his 36th birthday, while Zach Dezenzo was set to make his season debut in left field.

The Astros entered Wednesday with a 15-22 record, sitting fourth in the American League West, four games behind the division-leading Athletics.
