The Boston Red Sox could have to make changes to their rotation plans with opening-day starter Brayan Bello working through a shoulder ailment early in spring training. Though he has returned to throwing, he hasn't pitched in bullpen sessions, leaving him questionable for Opening Day. Though the team is optimistic, his return schedule is unclear, prompting the Red Sox to look at alternative options if he isn't on the mound.
Brayan Bello's shoulder pain holds up spring training momentum
Bello, who was a big piece of Boston's bullpen, is behind where he needs to be after feeling discomfort in his shoulder during camp. Although he has resumed throwing, he has not advanced to bullpen work, and his status for Opening Day is still unclear. Manager Alex Cora hasn't closed the door on Bello being ready, but he hasn't guaranteed that he will be available to begin the season on schedule.
The right-hander, who is 25 years old, finished last season 12-11 with a 4.42 ERA. He has a mid-90s fastball, a sinker that is effective, and a solid changeup, making him an integral member of a rotation that includes Tanner Houck, Garrett Crochet, Walker Buehler, and Lucas Giolito. Healthy in 2025, with high hopes, the Red Sox will need Bello to vie for the American League East.
Red Sox depth in rotation might be tested
If Bello is not healthy to start the season, the Red Sox would have to resort to alternatives. Kutter Crawford was set to be the alternative man up, but he also has an injury, adding another layer to the problem. That might pave the way for Richard Fitts, Quinn Priester, or Cooper Criswell to get a chance to join the rotation if necessary.
The Red Sox, who went 81-81 last season, made major offseason acquisitions with the additions of Crochet, Buehler, and third baseman Alex Bregman. They have opened up expectations, so the availability of Bello is even more important. Boston will require a new rotation to get out in front in a tough division with a difficult schedule looming.
Bello's setback with his injury has brought uncertainty to the Red Sox as they head into the 2025 season. Although there remains a possibility he will be available for Opening Day, his slower-than-expected progress in spring training is concerning. If he cannot play, Boston will have to count on its depth to cover the gap as it tries to begin the season strong against the Texas Rangers on March 27.
