Atlanta Braves ace pitcher Spencer Strider jumps back onto the mound again Monday night in his first spring training appearance in a year after Tommy John surgery. Against the Boston Red Sox, Strider threw 2⅔ perfect innings, fanning six of the eight batters he faced, a promising return for the 26-year-old right-hander.
A remarkable return to the pitch
Both fans and teammates have been awaiting the return of Spencer Strider. He set himself as one of the most dominant pitchers in Major League Baseball before injuring himself in 2024. In 2023, Strider led the majors with 20 wins and 281 strikeouts, earned his first All-Star selection, and finished fourth in the Cy Young Award voting.
His absence was sharply felt in 2024 with the Braves, who reached the playoffs but were eliminated in the wild-card round.
Strider’s road to recovery has been laborious. During his rehab, he was focused and committed, making it quite clear he was eager to return to the field. His teammates and coaches have been there for him, with fellow ace Chris Sale saying before Monday’s game, “
Let’s not forget, he’s still the best pitcher on this team.”
Implications for the Braves' season
Spencer Strider getting through this one relatively unscathed is a relief for his confidence and that could pay dividends a couple of years down the line. His return strengthens a rotation that already includes established arms (like Sale) and blossoming players (like Spence Schwellenbach). With Strider back, the Braves are now set up to have one of the most dominant pitching staffs in the National League.
Atlanta Braves' front office has bought low on players to add depth to its roster, signing the likes of outfielder Jurickson Profar and pitcher Davis Daniel.
But the internal jolt provided by Strider’s return may prove to be just what the team needs to little deeper into the postseason. Analysts observed that a healthy Strider, along with the expected return of star outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr., gives the Braves the potential to run away with the N.L. East.
As spring training rolls on, all the attention focuses on Strider and how will he perform and accumulate more innings. If his debut was any indication, the Braves and their fans have plenty to be excited about for the coming season.
