Judge’s numbers in the tournament were not great, but they were not the worst either. He finished 6-for-27, with two home runs, five RBIs, six walks, and seven strikeouts. Still, one moment stood out. In a key game against Italy, he struck out in the ninth inning with a runner on base. That moment stayed with fans and added fuel to the debate around his leadership.
Alex Rodriguez and Michael Kay defend Aaron Judge as Team USA struggles in World Baseball Classic final
After the loss, former Yankees star Alex Rodriguez came forward in strong support of Judge during the FOX broadcast. He made it clear that people are being too harsh on him.“Aaron Judge is an American treasure,” Rodriguez said. “I’m tired of people trying to nitpick at him—that he can’t do this, he can’t do that. Here’s the bottom line: he’s a US patriot. He’s a gentleman.”
Rodriguez also explained that Judge’s role in the team went beyond just performance. He shared how Judge’s decision to play had a bigger impact on the squad.
“Paul Skenes said something very interesting: once Aaron Judge said yes, the domino effect happened and everyone followed. So his engagement, him being a captain, goes so far beyond a home run or a throw in right field,” he added.
But things slowly changed. The team struggled in closer games, including a tight win over Mexico and a surprising collapse after leading Italy 8-0. Even in the knockout rounds, they had to grind out results.
In the final against Venezuela, the team could not build momentum. Judge himself went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. He was also on deck when Bryce Harper hit a crucial home run, but later struck out again in a key moment. New York broadcaster Michael Kay also defended Judge on his podcast, pointing out that the whole lineup failed, not just one player.
“We can go up and down that lineup and they all struggled. But the one guy everyone wants to blame is Aaron Judge,” Kay said via YouTube. For now, the debate continues. But voices from inside the game are clearly asking fans to look at the bigger picture.
