Jon Sumrall, the current head football coach at Tulane University, will be leaving after Tulane's postseason in 2025. Under his expertise, the Tulane Green Wave made back-to-back American Conference Championship Game appearances. But after two seasons with the team, he has decided to move to Florida, and will be coaching the Florida Gators from the 2026 season, and in his stead, the Tulane management has decided to promote their current pass game coordinator, Will Hall, as the next head coach.
While the official announcement is yet to be made by the Green Wave, it's expected to come within the week. Florida, on the other hand, has already made their announcement, naming Sumrall as the next head coach. And the Tulane team didn't need to think much to make their decision and land on Hall as their preferred candidate for the position.
Will Hall to replace Jon Sumrall as Tulane's head coach
Will Hall is officially set to take over the position of head coach for the Tulane Green Wave football team at the end of the 2025 College Football Playoff season. He served as Tulane's passing game coordinator during the 2025 season, returning to New Orleans after previously having worked under former coach Willie Fritz during the 2019-2020 season.
Before deciding on Hall, Tulane had pursued LSU defensive coordinator Blake Baker, but he chose to remain in Baton Rouge, especially with the Tigers having brought in new head coach Lane Kiffin. This led to the team landing on Hall, who has been given the promotion from assistant coach to head coach with Sumrall's impending exit.
Hall has a 70-50 (.583) overall record so far in 10 seasons in his coaching career. He was with Southern Miss from 2021–2024, but got sacked halfway through the last season, and eventually returned to Tulane in 2025 as their PGC, and now will be serving as the team's head coach from 2026 when Sumrall leaves for Florida. Tulane will enter the College Football Playoff as the 11th seed and face the 6th seed, Ole Miss - who recently lost their head coach then Kiffing to LSU. On December 20, the two teams will face each other, and after Sumrall's exit, the 45-year-old will take over.
