For several teams, these strips are treated as essential equipment, much like helmets, sunglasses, and gloves. Cyclists use nasal strips mainly to help with breathing during intense rides and to improve sleep and recovery during long race schedules. At events such as the Pune Grand Tour, riders are often seen carefully placing a nasal strip on the bridge of their nose just before starting a stage. The objective is to keep the nasal openings wide so that air can flow more freely. This promotes easier breathing, allowing the cyclist to perform better when climbing hills.Professional cyclist Enzo Fuentes said nasal strips became part of his routine after he joined a professional cycling setup. Good quality sleep is very important for all cyclists, but especially since in stage races, the recovery period between stages is vital for overall performance.


How nasal strips help cyclists with breathing and recovery

Nasal strips work by gently pulling the sides of the nose outward. According to team physiotherapists, this reduces pressure in the nasal muscles and lowers resistance in the airways.
When airflow improves, riders can breathe more smoothly and maintain a steady rhythm, even when they are tired. Many European teams, including those from Spain, France, the Netherlands, and Belgium, travel with boxes of nasal strips and share them among their riders. Malaysian teams have also adopted their use. Earlier versions of the strips were dark and easy to spot, but most teams now prefer skin-colored or transparent strips that are barely visible during races.Cyclists do not only wear nasal strips while riding. Riders also commonly use them while they sleep, mostly in stage races. During stage races, cyclists can keep their nasal passages open while sleeping, which may help them sleep more deeply and recover faster from the intense demands of competing over consecutive days. Correct placement of the nasal strip is important for it to work properly. Riders often use their phone camera as a mirror to place the strip in the exact position in the middle of the nose. A strip placed too high or too low may not be effective.Nasal strips are often used along with other simple routines that help riders feel prepared. Australian cyclist Dylan Hopkins has spoken about carefully pinning his race bib as part of his pre-race habit. Although they are not based on the scientific method, these routines can help cyclists to remain calm and focused during their races. As professional cycling continues to focus on small performance gains, nasal strips have earned a place as a simple but useful tool for better breathing, improved comfort, and stronger recovery.
