Notably, Matt Weston did not begin his sporting journey in skeleton racing. He first played rugby and later trained in taekwondo. Many people expected that he would become one of Britain’s top winter athletes. He only started skeleton racing in the summer of 2017 and made his World Cup debut in January 2020.

His rise was quick. In 2021, Weston won a World Cup gold medal. It was the first time a British man had done so in more than 13 years. He then became Britain’s first skeleton world champion in eight years in 2023.
