British figure skater Kristen Spours reached a lifelong dream when she qualified for her first Winter Olympics. Just three weeks later, her world turned upside down. She woke up one morning unable to feel strength in her left leg. Doctors later found a ruptured disc in her spine. The injury came at the worst possible time, right after she had secured her Olympic place at last year’s World Championships. What followed was a long and painful journey. Spours went through months of rehabilitation, spinal surgery, and more recovery work. At one stage, the 25-year-old believed her skating career might be over. The sudden shift from Olympic joy to serious injury affected her both physically and mentally, pushing her to question her future in the sport.

Kristen Spours finds new meaning of life after injury setback

Kristen Spours admitted to BBC Radio Wiltshire that the period after her injury was one of the darkest times of her life. She explained that the pressure of Olympic qualification had already taken a toll before the injury even happened. Once qualifying was over, there was no chance to rest.Despite the setbacks, Spours slowly worked her way back. Living in Swindon, she focused on healing and rebuilding her confidence. In November, she returned to competition in stunning fashion.
She won the British women’s singles national title, her second overall, in her first event of the season. The result marked a powerful comeback after months away from the ice.Her momentum continued into 2025. Spours finished ninth at the European Championships, the best result by a British woman at the event since 2009. Next week, she will compete at the European Championships again. Next month, she will represent Team GB as part of an eight-athlete figure skating squad at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.Looking back, Spours feels it is no longer just about medals, but about resilience and personal growth. For the first time in her career, she feels free from expectations and pressure. While she remains competitive, she says this journey belongs to her alone. She reflected on how she faced the hardest moments, went through surgery, and fought her way back with support from others. Now, she wants to enjoy every second on the Olympic stage. Spours said standing on the ice as an Olympian will be her moment, made even more special by her mother being in the crowd.Spours began skating at the age of six and once loved sparkly costumes, though she now prefers catsuits. She has lived in the French Alps and Milan and credits her family and coaches for guiding her through the past year. The experience, she says, has prepared her better than ever for the pressure of the Olympic spotlight. Also Read: Who is Lee Hae-in, the South Korean figure skater heading to the Winter Olympics 2026
