The United States Olympic athlete Charlie Volker has announced his retirement just weeks before the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina. Volker, a key push athlete in US bobsled, confirmed he will not compete at next month’s Games.The decision comes at a crucial time, with team selections close and final preparations already underway. Volker was widely expected to earn a spot on the Olympic roster.

The 28-year-old made the announcement after ongoing health concerns stopped his comeback plans. Volker, who competed at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, said concussion-related issues forced him to step away from the sport. His retirement comes less than two weeks before USA Bobsled and Skeleton names its Olympic team and just days before the Winter Games officially begin.

Charlie Volker explained that his decision followed months of difficulty recovering from a concussion suffered earlier this season. After continued symptoms and further medical evaluations by the team’s sports medicine staff, he was advised to retire for health reasons. He shared that walking away was painful, especially so close to the Olympics, and admitted it hurts knowing he will not be competing alongside his teammates.

USA Bobsled and Skeleton later confirmed his retirement. The organization praised Volker for his professionalism, character, and contributions to the program. Officials said he will be missed for the remainder of the season but expressed confidence in the depth and resilience of the men’s bobsled squad heading into the Games.

Volker entered the season as a strong Olympic contender. He had set a team record at the push championships and was considered one of the top athletes in the program. His sudden exit leaves a noticeable gap just as final preparations were being finalized.

At the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, Volker competed in both the two-man and four-man bobsled events. He finished 27th in the two-man competition and helped the four-man team secure a 10th-place finish. Earlier that same year, he also won a bronze medal at a Bobsleigh World Cup event in Winterberg, Germany.

Before switching to bobsled, Volker was a standout running back at Princeton University. He finished his college football career with 1,994 rushing yards, ranking seventh in school history. After failing to reach the NFL, he was encouraged by a former bobsledder to try the sport. Volker later described his first bobsled ride as overwhelming and dizzying but quickly adapted.

Although his Olympic journey has ended sooner than expected, Volker leaves the sport with notable achievements and respect across the US bobsled community.
